Gay People and Cats

Posted by Theresa McMillan on Thursday, May 11, 2023,

Assumptions! What makes people want to assume the worst about people they never met? People even do this about animals. It is very upsetting! I think what is the most heartbreaking is stigmatizing people and animals that only want our love and acceptance. The LGBTQ community and cats are the two that share this common problem. How can our society learn to love? How can they change their thinking and embrace differences? I like to share my journey of loving the gay community and cats.

To Write Again

Posted by Theresa McMillan on Thursday, April 13, 2023,

By Theresa McMillan

My keyboard is talking in the right tone again! It’s been several years since I can seriously think about writing and creativity. It seems I keep backspacing myself in trying to write and then erasing thought entirely. Why does my head do all the brainstorming but then suddenly freeze like an icicle and it seems forever to melt? If only my mind can talk to me about it, but I guess it only talks to itself.

People think chaos can bring out creativity. And someti...

Disability Pride Month!

Posted by Theresa McMillan on Thursday, July 14, 2022,

I am very happy to learn of Disability Pride Month! I actually forgot that July is recognized as Disability Pride, and sorry to say that I’m not around a lot of people that share the same sentiment. It is sad that we, as a Disability population, still are fighting for social acceptance and to live as normal as possible. I never thought I would be an advocate for disabilities, but in the last few years, I realize this is my calling.

We still live with stigmas. People still judge p...

Hello Everybody!

Posted by Theresa McMillan on Thursday, June 30, 2022,
I can't believe it is 2022 already! I'm sorry I have not posted anything since 2015. I actually have written some things here and there but just have not been in the mood to post them. Things in my life have been like a roller coaster emotionally and mentally for me. I will write some about what I have been through in another post. I'm hoping that I got my creative juices back again as they say. And I will try to post something new once a month.
But in the meantime, check out my olde...

Summoning Up for Fall

Posted by Theresa McMillan on Friday, August 21, 2015,

I’m very excited in returning to college to finish getting my English Literature degree! Taking a year off was what I needed to evaluate what I want to do and where I’m going. The biggest decision was to stay at my current college or go somewhere else. Before my leave of absence, there were many changes. Some that were very jarring to me and also I had doubts about my major. I love writing but not technical. But “Time heals all wounds” as they say. And it also lets you digest the chan...

Magic Maturity

Posted by Theresa McMillan on Wednesday, June 17, 2015,

There are years and times in one’s life that change automatically. It’s like a magic wand waved across one’s head and it finally dawns on a person that she or he has the power to control their life. Before then, one believes their life is control by others and circumstance. Sometimes people never grow out of that mindset. They become prisoners in their own mind.

Luckily, I have finally realized I have the potential to change my life. It’s not going to be easy.  I need some super stre...

“Mike & Molly: A Comedy Show that Deals with Challenges in Delightful Characters”

Posted by Theresa McMillan on Friday, January 30, 2015,

I started watching Mike & Molly last year and have been truly fascinated by the characters. The early seasons of Mike & Molly are the most enduring. Molly is a teacher who gets little support from her mother and sister. Mike has a mother that smothers him with love and food. Both have different backgrounds but the same need to be love.

The first episode introduces Mike and Molly. Both are struggling with weight issues and feeling uncomfortable about their body. People around ...

"Halloween Woman"

Posted by Theresa McMillan on Wednesday, November 5, 2014,

“I know I look a little scary, but don’t be afraid. All I want is a friend.” This is from a page in my children’s book I’m Smiling on the Inside. As a grown woman, it’s sometimes ironic that I feel this way too about adults, particularly men. It’s like I’m some Halloween Woman that men run away from! There’s a lot to be said about how a man reacts to how a woman looks, and I know how this is to be true! LOL!

But in all seriousness, I wish men weren’t so frightened. Just l...

“How to Define a Smile”

Posted by Theresa McMillan on Tuesday, July 22, 2014,

Because of being born without the ability to smile, I learned that I had to define what a smile is.  If I could physically smile, would that be the smile I actually want? Or is a smile more than facial expression?  Growing up I never really thought about it. I knew I looked different and there were times I would fantasize about having a beautiful face with a glowing smile. But most times I just didn't really think about it.

When I was in my early twenties, I saw a little girl on the news tha...

"Independence is Learning How to be an Individual"

Posted by Theresa McMillan on Saturday, July 5, 2014,

I've been thinking a lot about independence lately. What do I think and feel about myself is what makes me an individual. If I think I need to rely on others’ opinions, then I’m mostly part of a group. I’m not an individual as I care too much on what others think. This seems very basic and simple to do, but it is not. I still struggle with wanting confirmation on my ideas or my future plans. This is dangerous in a way because I may miss a direction that can open up a whole new world for...

2013: A Year of Challenge and Change to 2014: A Year of Transition

Posted by Theresa McMillan on Sunday, March 16, 2014,

I’m sorry I haven’t written anything for a while. The winter months always seem dark for me.  Both of my parents got very sick and died during this of year. So you can see it has its haunting reminders.  The last few months of 2013 have been more of traumatic than in recent years. My next door neighbors, whom I have known since I came to live here fifteen years ago, decided to move. They were getting older and wanted to be closer to their family. I understood and supported their decision,...

"Pen in Hand: or What would John Lennon Say Today"

Posted by Theresa McMillan on Wednesday, October 9, 2013,
What would John Lennon say today?
He would still say, "Give Peace a chance."
Let's end this ridiculous political dance.
With pen in hand,
He would say, "All you need is love."
Why is it so hard for you?
Just look at what the world's going through:
War is not the answer to look to.
Come on, let's have the new revolution
With the idea of love as the solution.
With pen in hand,
John would say, "Why can't you understand?"
Yes, we are all from the different countries,
But inside we are all the same.
So let's st...

“Haven't Overcome, but Feeling Overjoyed.”

Posted by Theresa McMillan on Thursday, August 15, 2013,

I'm so overcome by the word overcome. The word is overused and very misleading. When I hear the word overcome, I think of someone who recovered from a sickness or an accident. They do not have to deal with whatever what made them temporary confined. It is not a condition that will stay with them for life and they will go on like nothing ever happened.

I’m sorry to have to say this, but I haven’t overcome my disability.  I was born with it, and it will be with me for life.  I...

"A Poem About Shirley Temple Posing for a Picture "

Posted by Theresa McMillan on Sunday, August 4, 2013,
Curly head

She sits in an Indian Costume holding a fan

Looks like she's being patient

She's a good girl, very smart

Obedient and kind

A girl everyone would smile at

Peach and Pink

Are what her colors are

Her eyes bright blue

With all her charm sparkle in them

She's ready for her cue

Then she will dance and sing

People will be singing right along

No matter how depressing their life might be

Her presence is welcome

She's the American Girl everyone treasures!

"Worship"

Posted by Theresa McMillan on Monday, July 29, 2013,
People shouldn't worship stones
Actually they shouldn't worship glass either
Glass is nothing but a pane
It can't heal the hurt within
It is mostly a building
Worshiping them is useless
They can't talk back or give advice
They are just beautiful works of labor
Let's remember to worship the spiritual things
Instead the physical ones
We will not be disappointed
When they don't last as long.

"Cats That Like to Eat Rats"

Posted by Theresa McMillan on Monday, July 8, 2013,

If I should write a fable, it would be something like this: There lived a littlest kitten. All the other kittens didn’t care about him. They thought he would never amount to much since he was so small. “You’re never big like us,” they taunted him. He was hurt that they said things like that and left him out of the group. But he always remained kind to them.

The kittens loved chasing the rats around the house. It was fun and for exercise. “It’s s so much fun to chase our food! We...

Princess to the World: In Memory of Princess Diana

Posted by Theresa McMillan on Saturday, June 29, 2013,
She was born in 1961
With blond hair and blue eyes
She was like a little angel
That fell from the sky
She loved sports and animals as a little girl
She thought they were the best things in the world
When she grew up, her heart was with children
She became a teacher just to care for them
She became a princess in 1981
She was so lovely and beautiful to everyone
Shen then had two handsome boys
That brought her lots of joy
She had a big heart for people who were different
She wanted to make a difference

My Definition of Frendship

Posted by Theresa McMillan on Friday, May 31, 2013,
Many people have different definitions of friendship, but I have a very narrow view on the subject. Some people call someone they just met his or her friend. Others say their friends are people they very rarely see. I think the word friendship is a word is a word that is used too often. Friendship is something that is very special. It takes time to build up a relationship with someone. It involves give and take and understanding of each other. From my own experience, I have tried to deve...

"My Simple Mother"

Posted by Theresa McMillan on Saturday, May 11, 2013,

Simplicity is a word that defined my mother’s life. She always wanted things simple like: directions, information, and appliances. Her desire was to always have a few complications as possible.

One of the reasons that my mother preferred the basic of everything was that it made life easier for her. She did not attend school beyond junior high level and often struggled with reading and learning complicated tasks. She finally learned to tell time when I was young. But her tenacity on keepi...

“Pretty Words on the Page”

Posted by Theresa McMillan on Friday, April 5, 2013,

Pretty Words are more than alliteration

They should lead to transformation

Of people’s hearts, souls, and minds

Giving them an alternative view

Of what is highly value

Push away the idea of conformity

That’s when we all can live in harmony

Pretty words on the page

Should open the door of the cage

To think freely and feel deeply of people’s inner soul

And to love them as they are

And what wonderment they behold!

Pretty words on the page

We are not to just enjoy them

The...

The Drive to Give Someone a Ride Home

Posted by Theresa McMillan on Tuesday, March 19, 2013,

“I need a ride home” is what I’m always requesting when there is some program that I’m interested in attending at my university. I’m not able to drive and the city transportation is very limited in the evening hours.  It makes me feel awkward that I have to entice someone to give me a ride. Other times I decide to forgo the event, because I don’t want to feel like I’m a burden.

The transportation issue is a major issue for me. I tried to discuss this problem with a college in...

“Church Questions”

Posted by Theresa McMillan on Saturday, March 2, 2013,

I have many church questions:

That is my confession

All the things that I was taught since I was little

Seem to be nothing more than a leaf that whittles

Church says they are kind, compassionate, and considerate

But they are opposite in every way-

Cold, cruel, and condemning

They make outsiders feel demeaning

What a bunch of hypocrites!

That’s why I just give up and quit

I still believe in God-

But I don’t believe in the church anymore.

They are nothing more than an eye sore...

Division in the Disabled Community

Posted by Theresa McMillan on Sunday, February 17, 2013,

“It’s okay to have a disability, but please act normal”. Sometimes I get this feeling from people. It is not that they are being mean. I think mostly it’s because they are having issues accepting oneself and that seeing another disabled person who acts “not normal” only confronts them about their own differences.

Personally, I felt I’ve been ignored or shun by other disabled people. Whenever I reach out, I get a recoil look. I have also known disabled people that are pleasant...

Far from the Tree and Appreciating Andrew

Posted by Theresa McMillan on Friday, February 1, 2013,

One word that I can describe about the book, Far from the Tree, is challenge: the challenge for people with differences to love themselves, the challenge for families to accept their loved ones as they are, and the challenge for society to embrace people of unique personalities and physical differences.

As a person with many differences, I can relate to the many people featured in the book and understand what is like to live in a society that is very challenging and confusing.

I apprecia...

"Normal and Me"

Posted by Theresa McMillan on Saturday, January 26, 2013,

I wanted Normal but Normal didn’t want me. I didn’t understand this. It really unsettled me. One day I talked to Normal: “Why didn’t you want me?” I asked. Normal replied: “Because normal is not normal anymore.” Perplexed, I asked what that meant. She said: “Normal was normal a long time ago. When people were first created, they were normal. Their life was centered on caring and loving one another.  However, when they got to be rich and interested in achievement and in ma...

"Strip Away the Title"

Posted by Theresa McMillan on Saturday, January 26, 2013,

We spend our whole life to obtain a title

As a result, for many, it becomes an idol

Doctor, Lawyer, Professor or Director

Something other than our name

To give us importance and acclaim

But strip away the title

And we are all still the same

We may think we are everything

By what we have obtainrd

But the core of us still remains

Our titles don’t change us

They are just a part we play

Go ahead, “Strip away the title.”

It’s nothing but a facade, anyway.

Creepy Katey

Posted by Theresa McMillan on Friday, October 5, 2012,

The village of Haughty was a glowing city of perfection. Everybody and everything had a precise look of beauty. Whenever there was an image or individual that was not quite right, they would cry, “Fix it.”

Disabled people were welcome here but they were told to be discrete. “Don’t ask, don’t tell” was the law in Haughty. Since most disabled people wanted to be “normal,” they didn’t protest this policy.

Creepy Katey didn’t care much for laws. Especially when she though...

My Time is Different Than Yours

"My time is Different than Yours"

Theresa McMillan

I live on a different time table. I was born with a time clock that runs slower than other human clocks. It’s not easy at times trying to understand this world’s time. I struggle to keep  up with the immortal ticking sound but to no avail.

When everyone says, “Hurry Up!” I want to say, “Slow down! I can’t keep up!”

Why are they so much in a hurry anyway? Don’t they understand that they will all be going to the same plac...

That’s what I want to persuade!

I know I have eccentric behavior

Please look on it in good favor

It may take me time

To understand the world’s rhyme

I may live in a slower pace

And don’t rush in such haste

I’m pretty in my own way

Don’t want to live in false in society

And lose all my identity

Please cherish my unique outlook on life

My views may seem simple and small

But all I care about is...

“Disfigured Love”

Theresa McMillan

Longing for love is all I have known

As I get older I feel so alone.

Boyfriends and girlfriends are all around me,

But I’m just one, you see.

It’s hard coming home and there’s nobody there,

No one who will be able to share and care;

I know that guys don’t think much of a woman like me

With disfigured hands and feet and an unusual face

To them I’m nothing more than a disgrace!

They don’t get to see the woman inside;

They see the ...
