The village of Haughty was a glowing city of perfection. Everybody and everything had a precise look of beauty. Whenever there was an image or individual that was not quite right, they would cry, “Fix it.”

Disabled people were welcome here but they were told to be discrete. “Don’t ask, don’t tell” was the law in Haughty. Since most disabled people wanted to be “normal,” they didn’t protest this policy.

Creepy Katey didn’t care much for laws. Especially when she thought they were meant to stifle her true self. She had a very distinctive look and manner. She felt like The Elephant Man.  Her unusual walking style and other oddities gave her away every time. Whenever she walked by a person, she heard them say, “There goes Creepy Katey!” Sometimes this really upset her. Other times, she learned to cope with it. She was a very tough person on the inside.

Because she was not shy in talking about her disability and proud of it, other people her age felt awkward and a bit intimidated. “She is very bold,” as one of her peers stated. But it never wins her many friends. She wanted to have friends, but they all wanted to talk about boys and dating and things like that. Katey felt like an outsider and didn’t know how to be one of them.

But Katey loved little children. Children were very accepting of Katey. They always said “hi” to her and run up to her to talk to her. The children’s parents didn’t like Katey getting near them and gave her a look that said, “Stay away from our children.” This really hurt Katey more than anything.

One day a new neighbor moved into Katey’s neighborhood. He looked normal, but as people know, looks can be deceiving. He never mowed his lawn. He said mean things to his neighbors. He even had wild parties late in the night. But the worst thing he did was to scare little children. He would coaxed them over to his house and then begin telling them that Santa clause was not real and destroy all their imaginations of make believe by stating they needed to “grow up!” But what angered the adults the most was that he said to the children that their parents were liars. Some children ran away home, whereas others tried to reason with the man.

The neighborhood was outraged by all of this. “What kind of a horror of a man to come and invade our village? We can’t have a man like this in our town.” So they wondered how to get rid of him.

The community was so used to its ideal and serene existence that they never thought about how to defend itself. They had to really think up something fast! Some of them thought about setting his house on fire. Others thought about shooting guns off to scare him. These ideas were not good enough for some people who thought the ideas weren’t scary enough.

As they talked and wondered how to scare him off, Katey walked in. They all stopped and looked at her. Some of the people in the community said, “What are you doing here, creepy Katey?” Katey was so used to their remarks that she just ignored them. She sat down in a chair to hear their discussions.

After a while, Katey stood up and said, “I have an idea!” Some of them snickered with laughter and said, “Why do you want to help us?” Katey boldly say, “I love little children and I don’t think it’s right for someone to destroy their innocent minds. Plus what I’m about to show you will be the ultimate scare tactic!”

Then Katey did something she never did before. She sat down and undid her shoe lace. Then she slowly took her shoe off and then there was nothing, she took something from her shoe and it was her foot! She explained that she was born without feet and she wears prosthetic feet. A lot of older people were aghast while the younger people thought that was cool.

One teenage boy, who thought Katey’s disability was the most awesome thing he ever seen, said, “How about if Katey comes to the nasty neighbor’s house, and I come along with her with an axe. We can scare him off by saying we have a tradition of cutting off a new neighbor’s foot. Some of them thought that was gross but liked the idea. The discussion didn’t last long for they all agreed on the date: Halloween, October 31. which was the next week.

The night of October 31st was very clear and crisp. The teenage boy and Katey hid around every tree until they came up to the nasty neighbor’s house. Katey asked the boy, “Are you scared?” He answered, “Yes, very.” “How about you?” he asked. “Very scared, but I know I need to do this for the children. Have you got the axe?” she inquired. The boy showed her the axe.

They got to the door. They both asked each other if they were ready. The boy rang the doorbell. The time before the door opened seemed like days. The door opened and the nasty neighbor appeared. He said, “What do you want?” with a stern look. The boy had the axe behind him, and with amazing confidence, he said: “Sir, you are our new neighbor and we have something to welcome you in our community.” Than Katey took off her shoes very slowly and then took off her feet. The nasty neighbor said: “What is this all about?” The boy pulled the axe from behind him and said, “We would like to amputate your foot.” The nasty neighbor looked at him in disbelief until the boy moved on him with the axe. The man ran and the boy chased him around saying, “We want to make meat out of your feet!” Katey then threw her prosthetic foot at him. The nasty neighbor ran to his car and drove away. He was never seen again.

The next day was a joyous occasion. Everyone heard how Katey and the teenage boy rescued their neighborhood from the Deceiver. They learned that ugliness is not always seen with the natural eye. Katey became beautiful to them. Someone shouted: “I knew creepy Katey could do it!” Katey felt very accepted.

Since that time, Katey has been a part of the neighborhood.  The people are not afraid of her anymore. When children say “Hi” or want to hug her, their parents let them with a big smile.

Also, disabled people in the village became very popular. They also realized that having a disability is something that should be value and recognized. As a result, disabled people stopped pretending to be normal and came out about their differences proudly. Their new law was: “Inward Beauty is Perfection!”

Creepy Katey will continue to inspire in her next adventure!
