One word that I can describe about the book, Far from the Tree, is challenge: the challenge for people with differences to love themselves, the challenge for families to accept their loved ones as they are, and the challenge for society to embrace people of unique personalities and physical differences.

As a person with many differences, I can relate to the many people featured in the book and understand what is like to live in a society that is very challenging and confusing.

I appreciate Andrew Solomon for sharing his story and, in doing so, decided to go on a quest to understand other people’s differences as well.  Learning that difference is valuable and enriches all of us is what is important in the end. No matter if someone’s difference is physical, mental, emotional, gender, or gay, he or she is beautifully perfect in their nature.

Thank you, Andrew, for writing such a heartfelt and honest look into how difference leads everyone to a greater understanding of "what is to be human."  Far from the Tree challenges us all to love and to be compassionate of all differences. This is the book to read.
